Creative Process
Find answers to common questions about commissioning murals, portrait artwork, decorative faux finishes, and custom artwork for residential and commercial spaces.
General Questions
How does the commissioning process work?
Every commission begins with a conversation about your space, your vision, and the atmosphere you’d like to create. I gather the information and put together a quote for you to approve. Once quote is approved, a design deposit is collected before any idea and design concepts are researched. This deposit allows me to spend time working on your project. Sometimes multiple ideas have to be created to arrive at the exact one that captures your vision. Once the concept is approved, the artwork is scheduled.
What types of artwork do you offer?
I offer a range of custom artwork designed to enhance both residential and commercial spaces. This includes murals, portraits, original commissioned paintings, custom unique art projects that need an artist touch and decorative faux finishes. Each piece is thoughtfully created to complement the environment it lives in—whether bringing personality and warmth to a home or adding character and visual impact to a professional space.
How long does a project typically take?
The timeline for a project depends on several factors, including the size, complexity, and level of detail involved and the location of where the artwork is going. Smaller pieces or portraits may be completed within a few weeks if schedule allows, while larger murals, faux finishes, or commercial installations may require additional time for design development, planning, and execution. During the initial consultation, a more accurate timeline can be discussed based on the specific goals and scope of the project.
Do you travel for projects?
Yes, I’m available to travel for projects, depending on where they are located. Many projects take place outside my immediate area, and arrangements can be made depending on the scope of the work. If outside a 2 hour drive time, lodging, and scheduling are discussed during the planning stage to ensure the project can be completed smoothly and efficiently on site.
How is pricing determined?
Pricing is based on several factors, including the size of the project, the level of detail in the design, materials required, and the time needed to complete the work. Larger murals, complex compositions, specialty finishes, or projects requiring extensive preparation may increase the overall cost.
Additional factors such as travel, special surface preparation, equipment needs (like scaffolding or lifts), and unforeseen circumstances—such as unplanned delays, scheduling changes, or site conditions that require extra preparation—can also affect the final price. During the consultation phase, these details are discussed to provide a clear understanding of the scope and estimated cost of the project.
Residential Projects
What areas of a home work well for murals or custom artwork?
Murals and custom artwork can enhance many areas of a home, especially spaces where you want to create visual impact or a sense of personality. Popular locations include living rooms, dining rooms, entryways, bedrooms, children’s rooms, stairways, and outdoor patios. Accent walls, hallways, and home offices are also wonderful opportunities to introduce artwork that adds warmth, color, and character to the environment. Thoughtfully placed art can transform everyday spaces into memorable focal points throughout the home.
Can you help develop design ideas if I’m not sure what I want?
Absolutely. Many projects begin with only a general idea, a feeling you want the space to evoke, or even a few images that inspire you. Part of the creative process is helping you explore those ideas and transform them into a clear artistic direction. Before any deep research can start, I will get your ideas and work up a quote based on the information you give. Once you are satisfied with your price, and before a deep dive goes into researching for your ideas or sketches are rendered, I need to collect either a design fee or a deposit for the project.
If needed, I can make a special appointment to come look at the style of your home, the colors and textures already present in the space, and the atmosphere you’d like to create. From there, concepts or samples are developed that reflect your vision while complementing the environment. The goal is to design artwork that feels natural to the space and truly personal to you.
What surfaces can murals or finishes be applied to?
Murals and decorative finishes can be applied to a wide variety of interior and exterior surfaces, depending on the space and the desired result. Common surfaces include drywall, plaster, wood panels, and properly prepared exterior walls. In some cases, murals can also be created on brick, concrete, cinderblock, or other architectural materials once the surface has been properly cleaned and primed.
Each project begins with evaluating the surface to ensure it is suitable for artwork and will allow the paint or finish to adhere properly. Proper preparation is an important part of the process, as it helps ensure the artwork not only looks beautiful but also lasts for many years to come.
In some instances, large canvas artwork can be painted in studio and adhered to your wall with professional wallpaper application.
commercial Projects
What types of businesses commission artwork?
Businesses across many industries commission artwork to enhance their spaces and create a memorable environment. Projects often include corporate offices, restaurants, churches, schools, hotels, retail spaces, medical offices, and hospitality venues. Custom artwork can help establish a welcoming atmosphere, create visual interest, and reinforce the personality and purpose of a space for both employees and visitors.
Can artwork incorporate branding or company themes?
Absolutely. Many commercial projects are designed to reflect a company’s brand identity, story, and culture. Artwork can incorporate brand colors, themes, or visual elements that reinforce the message a business wants to communicate. When thoughtfully integrated into the space, custom murals and artwork can strengthen brand recognition while creating a more engaging and inspiring environment for both clients and employees.
Do you collaborate with designers or architects?
Yes, collaboration is often an important part of commercial projects. We frequently work alongside interior designers, architects, and project managers to ensure the artwork complements the overall design of the space. By coordinating early in the process, the artwork can be thoughtfully integrated with the architecture, materials, and design vision of the project, resulting in a cohesive and well-balanced environment.
